smokefiring

Studio sale – torsos

I’m busy sorting out my studio for a big new commission and I need space…So I hope a lot sell during my studio sale on Saturday.

This torso was inspired by a song by Talking Heads called Listening Wind. So late one night a few years ago,  I made some graffiti…

This is a torso glazed in white and then smoke fired. The smoke has given a silvery and black shimmer to the surface. There is a scorpion on her shoulder.

This torso will also be in the sale

There will also be some of my new work – which won’t be included in the sale…

Smoke firing;Fire and Earth

I spent the weekend smoke firing, or barrelling my ceramic torsos.smoke-firing-blg-1

This is a bisque fired and glazed torso. smoke-firing-blg-alt-2

Which I placed in a galvanized dustbin and covered with dry leaves, straw and sawdust. You can see some of my dead headed hydrangeas in there, too!smf-blog-3

Then comes the fun bit!smoke-fi-blog-4

And the next morning the bins are cool enough to open…smoke-fir-blog-deborah-5

life casting

reduced-sizeTo create my torsos, I cast a model in plaster and then I make a mould from the cast. Each torso is press moulded using tiny pieces of clay which I incise with different patterns before joining them together.
The torso is then fired in an electric kiln before it is smoke fired.
To see more please go to my website www.annakeiller.co.uk.
My idea when I made this torso was to show the human body as a landscape, or at one with the land – Mother Earth personified.
